The common Whoopsie when it comes to recovery and training is simple.
Not understanding why recovery is needed. 😎
We are the gym monkeys that are addicted to this exercise thing.
We started this journey to become stronger, fitter, faster, and better versions of ourselves. For us to achieve this, we need to recover.
We get too used to the feel-good of the exercise and forget the bigger reason we are doing this. So we just keep training, and training no matter what until we burn out.
Understanding the purpose of recovery will help this.
To become stronger, fitter, faster, and better versions of ourselves we need to put our body through some stress to start the adaptation process.
That said, we need time to recover and let the adaptation take effect.
Think about doing a maximum set of pull-ups. You do 10. 💪
Then rest for 3 seconds.
You do another set. I bet you won't get to 10. Not even close. 2️⃣
Your performance decreases massively.
Now, Imagine you rested 2:00. Im not saying you would be able to 10 again. Maybe 7 or 8.
Your performance decreases marginally.
So how much time do we need to recover between full training sessions?
Well, It depends on you. We are all different when it comes to this.
But to help you here let's get general.
After cardiovascular conditioning as we see in our WOD training. You will need hours to recover. 🏃♂️
After exercise that makes us feel sore. Like, so sore walking on the ice after a leg day is unbearable. We need days.
After exercise that shocks our whole nervous system. We need weeks to recover. A good example of this is Coach Jaakko and his weight-lifting competitions. So heavy and powerful that. your body if just done. 🏋️
If we take the time to put our body through the stress. We need to take the time to recover.
If take the time, we will become the stronger, fitter, faster, and better versions of ourselves that we wanted to be when we started training. 💪
Now you know why recovery is important.
Next week I will talk about more practical ways we can aid recovery. In particular... sleep.
See you then 👀
